What It Means to Really Listen

The author, Stephen Shapiro, noted how he never really paid any attention to the emergency instructions that are given before a plane takes off. However, that changed when a flight he was aboard had a malfunctioning braking system. When the passengers aboard realized that they were possibly facing a real emergency situation, they all paid attention to the instructions given by the crew.

This made the author realize that he doesn’t really listen. And even when he tries to listen, he is still not hearing properly, due to a phenomenon known as “confirmation bias”.
